Dance is an important part of ancient sacred rituals. One of the last Masters of mystical oriental dance was Georgi Ivanovich Gurdzieff. The dances he taught were called ‘sacred exercises’, but in reality, they were ancient rituals. The word “ritual” means in Sanskrit ‘rita’, that is ‘order’ and in Russian it sounds like the word “rhythm”. Rituals were considered sacred because they carried the knowledge of the highest cosmic order. People, who mastered the knowledge of dancing received the very rare opportunity of obtaining also the knowledge of the highest cosmic order. One of the Carlos Kastaneda’s books describes a situations, where he and his Master, Don Juan were observing some dances of Dona Hinara. Suddenly Don Juan had said: “This is not a simple dance; it is creation!” Often, after reading a book or hearing some information, we say: “Now I know!” But really only one side of you knows: your ‘Mind’. Human beings have three basic modalities of knowing: emotional, mental and physical. When only one of them, either the mind or the emotions or the body ‘knows’, we should not feel entiteled to believe that we know something. Let us examine a simple situation like that of driving a car. If you have only heard or only seen how to drive a car, you cannot claim to have enough knowledge to drive it from one place to another. For you to be able todo so, you would need to practice , that is, know with your body. But you cannot learn it even if you would like to, if your emotions are not in it. Even in order to do a simple thing like driving a car, you need to ‘know’ with the your three ‘sides’ . Georgi Ivanovich Gurdzieff used to refer to this with the term: knowing with body, mind and emotions. Likewise, we can grasp the marvelous opportunity of receiving the knowledge of the cosmic order, only with the knowledge received through mystical oriental dances. First of all, why is acquiring this knowledge so valuable? Because cosmic order does not only govern the Universe, but everything, including human beings. When we understand the cosmic order, we can understand what governs us, how to live with it and what to do with it. Then we become able not only of governing ourselves, our body, our life and destiny, but also the whole world. In order to do this, during the dancing we need constantly and utmostly follow the proposition made by sacred rituals. Imagine you are reading a non-fiction book. If you read it only once, you may have the feeling that you know something. The full and hidden meaning of the same book, however, emerges only when we attentively read it the second time. This is when even deeper knowledge becomes accessible to you. If you read the same book a third time, than you truly start seeing something you had not noticed before, something extremely valuable. The same happens with dance. Dance is like a book. By dancing a sacred mystical dance, by continuously concentrating on its details and by doing these exercises more and more deeply, you will receive deeper knowledge. We wish you success on this path, as this is the path of self-realization. |
