Human beings are totally made out of habits. Furthermore, humans falsely believe that they are whole. In reality, people create various personalities so that, within a single individual may simultaneously live the good family-man and the hangman, compassion and cruelty, rationality and recklessness. As mentioned before, there are many different areas in the brain, each expressing a specific role of someone’s life - family-man, boss, lover, buddy etc. - which people, depending on circumstances, may adopt generating, thus, different personalities. In each case people simply play a role, become different, special, but never themselves. Even at this moment, while you are reading these words, you are assuming one of the most intelligent roles, that of the pupil, a role needed to make you feel complete. You are wrong to believe that you are whole. Within your there are a entire groups of people, functioning as they like. Each one of them takes over for five minutes and creates the situation they want you to be in. Only your name that remains the same and your body that changes a little make you think that you are whole. Yet, each area of the brain has its positive side: one can be wise and another can be effective in every action. They are all essential in life, their only drawback being the fact that they are divided. These ‘pieces’ are like servants taking up a place in a house other than their own: the stable-man in the kitchen and the cook in the stable. The most important clue that can help you to tidy up this mess is the ‘supervisor’, in other words, the most intelligent part of your brain, equipped with actions of self-stabilisation. These actions are, in fact, the practices of yoga. Most people present themselves as they wish, as if they were clear souls, intelligent or as if having a developed consciousness. In fact, all these are different thoughts and do not correspond to reality. We all identify ourselves with our bodies, but we only imagine that we are souls, even though we do not feel ourselves as being souls. We may not be conscious of our actions or of the fact that they control us. However, we keep on saying that we are conscious beings. We live, acting foolishly all the time, yet we like imagining that we are smart, we derive pleasure from it. A lot of people pretend that they know even things they are unaware of. They have a ready-made answer for every case and judge anything in the world, even what they have no idea about. This is the reason for which Christ used to say: “You are sons of deceit and daughters of lie”. The mind is similar to a piece of embroidery created by lies, and this can only be understood when a person exercises constant self-control. There can be a time when one becomes honest to themselves, but until then even their development can be a lie, just as everything else. We were born in lies and were taught how to lie for many years, but now we must re-examine what we have learnt. You can use any situation, any thought, in order to realize this. Dishonesty is a plague against truth; vanity and the internal dialogue should be stopped. This is the first goal. |
